LED Leads the Way to a greener future
LED Community Leisure hit the national stage early this March with the announcement that we have been working in partnership with the exciting British start-up company Deep Green to employ its revolutionary Immersion cooling technology.
This system, which provides heat generated from operating data servers to Exmouth Leisure Centre’s swimming pools, not only reduces the gas requirements by up to 60% but reduces carbon emissions by 25.8 tons. So, as businesses across the country struggle with rising fuel costs, Deep Green offers a way to combat this while reducing the centre’s carbon footprint.
Being the first company in the leisure industry to embrace this technology brought sudden overnight interest from media companies throughout the UK, US and across Europe, and by March 15th our Chief Executive Peter Gilpin was fielding interviews from the BBC and ITV national news. Peter stated;
“Exmouth Leisure Centre’s annual gas bill has risen from £20,000 to £80,000 since the start of the war in Ukraine. Deep Green’s innovative technology will dramatically reduce our energy bills and carbon footprint, meaning we will continue to be a key asset for the local community. We are already seeing the benefit. I’m certain this will transform leisure centres up and down the country for the better.”

Team members from across LED Community Leisure have entered the Great West Run to raise money for Hospiscare. The Great West Run is a half marathon taking place in Exeter on Sunday 21st May 2023.
LED's team includes Chris Duchenski and Charlotte Ward from Ottery St Mary, Lottie Edwards and Andrew Dare from LED's Community Engagement Team, Theresa England representing both Ocean Exmouth and Woodbury as well as Corey Leisk from Sidmouth.
Chris Duchenski, LED Team Captain, said: "We are fundraising to support Hospiscare's 40 club where we have committed to raising £1,000 in 2023. Some of us have never run before and some of us are experienced runners so it is a good mix. We all know someone who has been affected so it's good to support each other on our journey."
Hospiscare provides specialist care to patients and their families living with life-limiting illnesses across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.
Ellie Williams, Corporate Officer for Hospiscare, said: "Hopefully everyone in team LED has fun doing something new and the thought of what they are doing to support local families keeps you going on tough runs. £700 pays for a full day of care with 4
nurses per patient. The money raised will help take away the pain patients experience and support their families too. Thank you team LED for engaging with the community and supporting Hospiscare."

Sidmouth head over heels for gymnastics
Sidmouth Leisure centre hosted Devon Gymnastics' club competition on Saturday 18th March, which saw over 150 supporters cheer on the 80 competitors who train weekly with Devon Gymnastics.
With a wide age range of 4 - 16yrs old taking part there were chin up challenges, vaulting events and floor routines. Alongside this, development Gymnasts performed tumbling and somersaults, which was a great inspiration for the younger, newer gymnasts.
A cake stand on the balcony helped keep the spectators content while supporting some of the development gymnasts in fund raising for a humanitarian trip to Costa Rica.
This was the first competition since the loss of Peter Mills, who fought motor neurones disease until March 2022. Pete started Devon Gymnastics at Broadclyst Leisure Centre back in 1993, with daughter Somer Manley.
It was a mammoth task to organise this event, so a massive congratulations go to Somer Manly and her team for the work they put in creating this great day!

We are upskilling members of our team to be able to deliver PABAfit classes at our pools. PABAfit stands for Parent and Baby Aquafit and is a water-based fitness class for parents/carers to take part in with their little ones (4 months - 3 years). These will be coming to our pools very soon!
Matthew Payne's charity events
The second challenge is on Friday 23rd June where he will be joined by LED’s, Alan Cockram and Andrew Dare to walk the East Devon Way, which is 41 miles from Exmouth Lifeboat Station to Lyme Regis Lifeboat Station. He received amazing support last year which helped raise over £3000.

Charity Tennis tournament success

One of our amazing members, Emma Steel, will be running the London Marathon in aid of the Mental Health Charity MIND, for which she has so far raised £800.
To support her in this fantastic cause, Exmouth Tennis and Fitness Centre hosted a round-robin Tennis Triples event on Sunday March 26th
The players competed in a fast and furious round-robin event, followed by a prize raffle, contributed to by local businesses and auction for private tennis lessons and PT sessions.
After a great evening and fantastic turnout, the event had successfully raised an additional £700 for Emma and MIND, and we wish her every success with her upcoming run.
