Benefits of Exercise for Teenagers
It’s that time of year again! Back to school for juniors across East Devon and Somerset. Thanks to Raheem Sterling’s heroics and team GB it really has been an inspiring summer of sport. LED Community Leisure are here to keep juniors inspired and motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle as they return to school.
In this blog, I will outline some of the many activities available across LED to junior members and the benefits of a fit and healthy lifestyle for teenagers.

Improved Physical Health
Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiovascular fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control body weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as:
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
Participating in regular exercise can have very positive effects on a teenager’s mental health.
“Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural chemicals in your body that create feelings of happiness. Studies have shown that the health benefits of exercise in teens can significantly improve depression or anxiety. Even just getting 30 minutes of exercise a few times, a week can improve overall mood. Exercising with an anxiety disorder can help reduce symptoms in teens and allow them to calm down. Moderate-to-high intensity exercises can reduce anxiety sensitivity”.
Regular exercise can help your junior to become more self-confident and understand how, through hard work, they can achieve their goals. Exercise can create higher levels of energy and productivity allowing them to better express their thoughts and creativity in all aspects of life.
The stresses of exams and social pressures can have a big impact on teenagers and they need a way of dealing with this stress. Regular exercise can go a long way to help them manage this pressure. In addition to this they will be able to think more clearly and have more self-awareness and control.
The social aspects of fitness and sporting clubs for teens can be very beneficial and encourages them to interact with others. Having friends that they can surround themselves with who are also interested in exercise can be very motivating and keep them motivated to stay active and healthy. Additionally, they will be able to improve their social skills and interact with people creating a community.

Get Active Gym
LED's Get Active Gym sessions (previously known as 'Teen Gym') give 11-15-year olds the opportunity to use our gyms safely under the supervision of our gym team. Our sessions are for all ability levels and you can be confident that our instructors will guide your child through an exercise programme safely and effectively. Juniors of all ages are able to use our cardiovascular equipment such as the rowing machine, exercise bike and treadmill along with body weight exercises such as squats, press ups and abdominal planks. Once juniors turn 14 years old they are also allowed to use resistance machines such as the lat pulldown, leg press and chest press after a thorough induction from our gym team.
We offer Get Active Gym sessions at all LED Leisure Centres after school, for specific times please contact your local LED Leisure Centre directly.

Our Swim school team aim to offer a friendly and supportive environment with quality teaching and coaching, enabling everyone to achieve their potential through learning to swim. Swimming lessons run for a steady 50 weeks to ensure continuous improvement throughout the year. Lessons range from 30 minutes to 1 hour and are for children from 6 months all the way through to adults
We currently follow the Swim England National Teaching plan, which comprises of:
- Skill Development
- Stroke Development
- Understanding, awareness and fun
Swim school members are given the opportunity to pursue their goals in the sport of swimming to whatever level they aspire and are capable of achieving. Swimmers are supported and valued whatever their level from novice to national. Beyond mastering skills and achieving physical fitness, our swimmers will gain confidence, sportsmanship, discipline, commitment and an understanding that success results from hard work and goal setting.

Junior Tennis Lessons
If your child has ever shown an interest or you feel that tennis would be a good fit for them, then our junior tennis sessions could be for you. If you are unsure where to start, then book a 30-minute player assessment with one of our coaches who can recommend which level to start at.
At Exmouth Tennis & Fitness Centre our junior tennis classes are planned carefully and provide your child with the opportunity to learn, develop, practice and play tennis in a safe and fun environment. They will make friends along the way and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
