South Somerset LED member Amanda Phillips tells us her amazing journey...
I started to develop a Chronic Widespread Pain condition 14 or so years ago, which left me becoming registered disabled and suffering with severe pain 24/7. I found walking, sitting and standing very difficult. My mobility became so poor I could only walk 20m with sticks without stopping. The doctors gave up all hope of improvement and I was left to pace my life on huge amounts of pain killers including Fentanyl & Morphine.
When I was first referred to Goldenstones Leisure Centre by my GP many years ago, I could only manage walking half a length in the pool and swimming half a length. Very careful pacing over many years has enabled me to build up now to 32 lengths of Front-crawl in the Fast/Medium Lanes.
However, it wasn’t until February this year, following what I can best describe as God’s healing of the Neuropathic pain, that I was able to start on the Pulse Programme at Goldenstones with no sticks and no pain medication.
Under the watchful eye of Steve Belton, I began a very carefully crafted exercise programme to build up muscles that had simply wasted away after so many years of inactivity.
Although I had given up all hope of ever running again, after only 6 weeks on the Pulse programme, I was able to attempt a few 30s bursts of running on the treadmill and have after less than 3 weeks progressed to five x 1 minute intervals.
