Iron Man completed! ...A massive well done to Christine Doe!
Between being a mum and a full time Duty Manager for Exmouth Leisure Centre, Chris Doe still found the time to train for the epic event! All her spare time was dedicated to training and she still had a smile on her face wherever she went!
Here's what she had to say -
As I stood on the start line with 2500 others & listened to the National Anthem ring out it began to dawn on me that I was about to take on the biggest challenge of my life. I had spent 8 months fitting training in around my full-time job & family commitments & honestly even though I couldn’t have done anymore I didn’t know if I would make it to the finish.
The 2.4 mile swim quickly turned into a 2.7 mile battle for survival. I was swum over & battered several times but managed to run into T1 with a smile & a respectable time of 1:39.
I jumped on the bike for what was already turning into a very hot days ride. I had 6000ft of climbing & 100miles to cycle in less that 8hrs 30. I took off at a steady pace & as I approached the first of 4 big climbs I felt great. I was horrified to see some nasty accidents on route & as I descended a technical part of the course I reminded myself of the importance to stay focused. Each time I passed over a timing mat my thoughts turned to those tracking me at home. As I approached the last climb I found so much strength hearing my friends at the top cheering me on. As I approached T2 my emotions were mixed. I had smashed the bike course in 6:21, 2hrs faster than I thought I would but I had a marathon to run yet & the temperature was rising to 29c!
I left T2 in high spirits eating a cheese bap but that first loop was tough. The route involved 4 loops with a 1000ft of climbing. I kept reminding myself to drink & eat to keep my energy levels up but I began to suffer & it was a mental battle to just keep moving forward. The support was amazing & my last mile was an emotional one. My friends supported me all day & I was able to reward them with a smile & sprint down the red carpet as they announced CHRISTINE YOU ARE AN IROMAN! After 14hrs & 24 minutes my dream had come true. I really believe if you want it enough, work hard & never give up, anything is possible.
This is one incredible achievement! Here at LED we are all super proud!
