ASA Swim School at Sidmouth Swimming Pool

Swimming lessons

LED Swim Schools offes lessons for all ages and abilities. Build confidence, increase fitness and have fun along the way. Swimming is not only an essential life skill but an enjoyable and hugely effective way of keeping fit. We offer a comprehensive programme to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to learn to swim, improve their skills and to maintain fitness through the variety of sessions on offer.

The ASA Teaching Plan enables swimmers, young and old, to develop a wide range of skills in proficiency in the recognised swimming strokes. The emphasis on developing a feeling of ‘being at home in the water’ and of experimenting with a variety of movement patterns lays a solid foundation for developing a skillful swimmer.

DUCKLINGS: Water Activities for adults and pre-school children.  Providing the accompanying adult with the knowledge and skills to help the child gain confidence, competence and independence in the water.

Stage 1: Again the emphasis is on water confidence. The swimmers will learn to move about in the water safely and confidently; this includes being able to cope with being splashed and getting their faces wet.

Stage 2: Here the serious work begins swimmers will be encouraged to submerge their faces in the water and blow bubbles at the same time. They will need to push and glide on both their front and their back. Travel on their back and front for 5 metres; at this point they should be kicking from their hips and not from their knees or cycling.

Stage 3: Swimmers at the end of this stage should be able to sink under the water and push away from the side. Push and glide on their back and roll on to their fronts with their arms extended. Travel 10m on their back and 10m on their front. And fully submerge to pick up an object.

Stage 4: Swimmers should be looking towards being able to do a tuck float, scull, Swim 10m with their arms over the water, be able to do butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl kick and push and glide to the floor of the pool.

Stage 5: At the end of stage 5 swimmers should be able to swim 10m in all 4 strokes and with their faces in the water for front crawl. Perform a handstand, tread water, scull forwards and backwards.

Stage 6: Swimmers will be required to push off on their sides, glide, kick and rotate on to their backs, push off from the wall on their side, glide, kick and rotate onto their front. Swim 10m with their clothes on. Swim front crawl and breaststroke with at least 6 rhythmical breaths, swim butterfly with at least 3 rhythmical breaths. Swim 25m and perform a surface dive.

Stage 7: Swim strokes, 50m in all 4 strokes, Perform a movement sequence, perform a sitting dive. They must also swim 50m continuously using one stroke and swim 200m using 3 strokes.

Stage 8: At this point swimmers may choose to have a go at Synchronised Swimming, Rookie Lifeguard, Water Polo or Competitive Swimming. Contact the centre to find out what is being offered this term.

Waves: This is pre-competition 45 minute session focussing on stroke technique and stamina.

ADULT BEGINNERS: Structured lessons for ages 18 and over to acquire the basic swimming strokes and build water confidence.

ADULT IMPROVERS: Building on skills and encouraging more efficient use of strokes to allow smoother and more effective movement in the water.

Why not take that step and enrol yourself or your child for lessons and gain that water confidence and fitness.
