Devon Active Villages

Get on your bike this summer

Active Villages and execel cycling have teamed up again to bring the people in the villages around East Devon the opportunity to ‘get on their bikes’ with free guided tours.

Starting 9.30am Friday (26th) from Membury Primary School, all you have to do is turn up with your bike, helmet, appropriate clothing for the days weather, a drink and sensible footwear.

There will be a ride from Rockbeare Primary school at 1.30 the same day for approximately 3 hours.

Due to the succession of the Active Villages programme, Coordinator Mike Anderton has catered for four other villages including Broadhembury, Plymtree on Saturday 27th August and Colaton Raleigh and Clyst St. Mary on Monday 29th.

‘This particular activity is great as the whole family can join in. It is something to do over this bank holiday weekend that is free’ added Mike.

Just turn up 10 minutes before to register and away you go. All ages and abilities welcome.

About Devon Active Villages

Devon Active Villages is a county wide programme co-ordinated by Active Devon and delivered by Leisure East Devon Ltd. It seeks to support rural communities to develop long-term sports opportunities which enable people of all ages to experience the fun of sport, and build a life-long love of being active and healthy. In East Devon, Active Devon is working together with Leisure East Devon to ensure that the programme has maximum impact for the local communities of Feniton and Lympstone.

The programme aims to increase sports participation in Devon's rural communities by supporting village based opportunities. It is funded by Devon County Council and Sport England Lottery funding, and will work in over 150 parishes with between 500 and 2000 people.

Chief Executive of Active Devon, Neil Roberts, said: "We are confident that through this ambitious collaboration between a wide range of key partners and by supporting communities rather than just providing activities the foundations of sustained community activity can be built".

The Leader of Devon County Council, John Hart, said: "Devon County Council has worked closely with Active Devon on the bid and will be contributing £360,000 to Devon Active Villages over a three year period. Our villages often lack the opportunitie savailable to those who live in our towns and cities.

This programme wil lprovide many more people with the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of sports and at the same time, help improve levels of health and fitness."
